How digital twins can impact naval aviation 

Naval Air Systems Command’s Airborne Electronic Attack Systems Program Office (PMA-234) is turning to digital technology to improve readiness, explore new capabilities and expedite training.   

PMA-234 is in the early stages of using digital twins, which are virtual models designed to reflect a physical object accurately. PMA-234 has developed digital twin technology with an industry partner for the past six months.  

Army test commander visits Navy test center

U.S. Army Redstone Test Center (RTC) commander, Col. Joseph Alexander, recently spent two days at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, flying with U.S. Naval Test Wing Atlantic (NTWL) aviators.

During the visit, Alexander familiarized himself with NTWL and its U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) for first-hand perspective on Naval Aviation and the capabilities of naval aviators.

Navy engineers test aging equipment to find a cost-saving solution for MQ-25 Stingray

Engineers at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) are testing the Navy’s current fleet of Aerial Refueling Store pods to support the service’s new air-to-air refueling tanker, the MQ-25 Stingray, potentially saving millions.

Today, the current fleet of Aerial Refueling Store pods fly aboard naval aircraft like F/A-18 and are expected to reach their estimated end-of-life in 2025. Conversely, the MQ-25 will need dozens of pods delivered between now and 2035 as the Stingray heads to the fleet.

The Navy's new hearing protection: made-to-measure for every sailor

Naval aviation now has a better solution to the Defense Department’s most reported injury, noise-induced hearing loss, thanks to research and development at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD).

Using digital-imaging technology, NAWCAD is developing a novel process to fit and provide service members custom hearing protection more efficiently and with less risk. The improved process is safer than today’s current process–which uses silicone injections–and will cut delivery time by at least 50%.

Navy experiments with flight line of the future tagging technology

The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) recently conducted flight line of the future experimentation with artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to independently identify and track aircraft on the flight line with tagging, commonly known as QR codes.

The technology promises to greatly improve aircraft readiness and maintenance turnaround time by providing more accurate location and status information for aircraft and related support equipment.

Soldier at the helm: Navy test pilot school gets Army commander

The U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) changed command during a ceremony at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Jan. 12. 

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Aaron Kia relieved U.S. Navy Cmdr. Jeremy DeBons during an airborne change of command ceremony officiated by Naval Test Wing Atlantic Commodore, Capt. Elizabeth Somerville. Kia is the third Army commander in the school’s history. 

Navy successfully demonstrated unmanned cargo delivery systems for ship at sea

The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) recently demonstrated multiple unmanned systems in a first-of-its-kind mission to move supplies to ships at sea without the use of manned aircraft during an event at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in St. Inigoes, Maryland.

The demo, held in collaboration with the Small Tactical Unmanned Aircraft Systems program (PMA-263), employed unmanned vehicles to transport cargo weighing less than 50 lbs., which accounts for 90% of Navy logistics deliveries.
