There’s an old joke at the United States Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) that students spend half their day in class, half their day flying — and the third half writing reports. To help them save some of their precious time, the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division’s (NAWCAD) Innovation Hub (iHub) recently joined forces with USNTPS to fabricate a bracket that allows students to install test gear more quickly in aircraft cockpits.

Southern Maryland students and test pilots under instruction at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) will get their questions about space answered by NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station this week. The space-to-earth video downlink airs live at approximately 11:35 a.m. EDT Oct. 27, on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agency’s website.

The United States Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) held a graduation ceremony for Class 161 on Aug. 5. Twenty-nine students successfully completed the intense 11-month course of instruction and received their designations as Engineering Developmental Test Pilots, Test Flight Officers, and Test Engineers.

A first-of-its-kind detect and avoidance system called Guardian successfully proved it will make defense aviation’s manned/unmanned teaming safer during its first flight test at Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) headquarters, July 28.

“Guardian is a technology that will safely enable manned/unmanned teaming,” said Kris Melton, NAWCAD’s Guardian project lead. “We’re starting at DOD test ranges, but every squadron or ship could integrate this system seamlessly for a safer air wing at sea or ashore.”

The U.S. Navy has delivered the first of three Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) CN-235 military transport aircraft converted to a maritime patrol platform. This comes just three-and-a-half years after the U.S. signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance to begin increasing the capability and interoperability of U.S. and Malaysian forces.

NAVAIR’s National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) Tester of the Year is Lt. Cmdr. Matthew “Broates” Oates, government flight test director for small tactical unmanned aircraft systems at Air Test and Evaluation Squadron TWO FOUR (UX-24).

Competition is fierce for this prestigious award, which recognizes outstanding testers throughout the U.S. Navy who support programs effectively in delivering capability to the operating forces.
