Ten Naval Air Systems Command senior scientists and engineers were recently inducted as Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Research & Engineering Esteemed Fellows, the highest level of the NAVAIR Fellows program. Among those inducted was Edwin Rosenzweig, of La Plata, Md., formerly of Warrington, Pa.

Rosenzweig graduated with a BS in Aerospace Engineering from Penn State University in June 1972, received his MS in Aerospace Engineering from Drexel University in June 1975 and also graduated from the Naval War College Command and Staff program in 1992.

Rosenzweig was born and raised in McKeesport, Pa., and is a graduate of McKeesport High School.

Rosenzweig has worked for NAVAIR in the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) since 1972 where he began at what was then the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, Pa. He is currently an Aerospace Engineer, serving in the Airframe Technology Branch of the Structures Division of the Aircraft and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Department and is also a member of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE).

“Working for the Navy over the past 34 years has been both challenging and satisfying,” said Rosenzweig. “I have performed interesting research and development with a very accomplished and collegial team of coworkers and contractors on the cutting edge of structures and materials technology, and my contributions have been very much appreciated by the warfighter and beneficial to the national security of our country.”

“Because of this sense of value and teamwork,” Rosenzweig continued, “I do not mind committing the extra effort required to successfully complete programs. My keys to success have been scientific prowess, creativity and perseverance. In a technology sense, I fondly recall the awards and peer recognition I have received for many of my technical contributions. The camaraderie of the Navy/Marine Corps environment has also been beneficial for raising my family and providing support in times of personal need.”

Instituted in 2000, the NAVAIR Research and Engineering Fellows Program is a peer-oriented technical recognition program for the command’s most experienced and talented scientists and engineers who have made major contributions to naval aviation.

In a congratulatory letter to each of the Esteemed Fellows, Vice Admiral Wally Massenburg, NAVAIR Commander said, “Your selection was based on your superior knowledge and skills, continued significant contributions to Naval Aviation, and active participation in the Naval Air Systems Command Research and Engineering Fellows Program.”

According to Karen Jensen, NAVAIR Research and Engineering Fellows Program Coordinator, only the top 0.25 percent of the NAVAIR science and engineering workforce earns the Esteemed Fellow designation, which equates to about 16 out of 6,500 scientists and engineers NAVAIR-wide.

NAVAIR Associate Fellow is the first tier of technical recognition, the second tier is NAVAIR Fellow, and the third and highest tier is NAVAIR Esteemed Fellow.

The ceremony was held on August 30th at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.
