AIRSpeed Targeted to Cut 150 Man-Years of Effort in the Fleet
By Phil Zalesak
An AIRSpeed project team is targeting a 150 man-year reduction in the fleet associated with the re-supply and return of cartridge actuated (CADs) and propellant actuated devices (PADs) using AIRSpeed tools.
The project is a joint venture of Naval Air Systems Command, Naval Sea Systems Command, and the Naval Supply Systems Command. The project team is proposing automation and the elimination in redundant handling, packaging, and reporting to achieve the objective. The team includes Capt. Dave "Decoy" Dunaway, Precision Strike Weapons program manager (PMA-201), serving as the project sponsor and Paul McCafferty, assistant deputy program manager for CAD/PAD devices, serving as the deployment champion.
Team lead is Dale Thomas, CAD assistant program manager for logistics, Culmen International is providing contractor support, and Lt. Cmdr. Thor Osteboe of the Naval Reserves is providing Black Belt support.
The initial work will be completed during the next three months at Naval Air Station Lemoore and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
After completing the kaizen events at these bases the team plans to replicate the new process at other Navy and Marine Corps Air Stations.
