Web Site Migration

Archived Body

Taking place across NAVAIR, Web site migration encourages current Web site owners to convert the content of their Web site(s) into MyNAVAIR Communities of Interest (COI).

This change increases search efficiency, reduces Web hosting costs, provides increased Web service capabilities and, provides a centralized location for NAVAIR information.

Web site migration also reduces the total number of stand-alone Web sites across NAVAIR by converting the content contained within them to COI’s. With large participation, this effort will centralize Web-based data related to NAVAIR.

Centralizing the data within the MyNAVAIR site provides a one-stop shop for pertinent information thus simplifying searches.

“This approach will ultimately reduce the costs of hosting multiple stand-alone Web sites,” said Tracy Long, team lead for Web Applications Development at NAVAIR Information Management Department (IMD).

Once a Web site is converted to a COI, it will have a look similar to the MyNAVAIR Web site (https://mynavair.navair.navy.mil). The access will now be restricted to personnel who have PKI Web-enabled certifications.

Web site owners volunteer to migrate their Web sites. According to Long, the initial round of migrations is focusing on sites that are frequently accessed and can be easily transitioned without losing any current functionality. The next phase will focus on more complex sites that can be re-architected to benefit from the advantages of being integrated within the portal.

“All in all I think our COI migration has gone well”, said Joe Ellis, lead software engineer for E2C IDE team, who migrated the PMA-231 Web site to the PMA-231 Community of Interest.

“IMD’s Web Applications Development Team have been very helpful in answering all of our questions, and if they didn't know the answer right away they’d find out and get back to us. We are definitely much better off then we were a year ago,” he said.

According to Long, one of the many benefits of migrating content into the portal is that a Web site owner will not be required to get Functional Area Management approval for their Web site. MyNAVAIR is currently in an “Approved” status in Department of Navy Application Database Management Systems, therefore sites within it do not require separate approval. This approach, then, saves time for the Web site owner.
A COI also allows a specified group of users to share documents, post messages and share data through MyNAVAIR.

Capabilities found within a Community of Interest include:
· Calendar of Events
· Action Tracker
· File Repository
· Announcements
· Surveys
· Discussion Board
