An F-16 at North Island, California, benefits from advanced Uniform Have Glass coating and critical structural repairs completed by Fleet Readiness Center Southwest, enhancing both its training realism and operational safety for Navy pilots.
FRCSW expands F-16 capabilities with advanced coatings and critical structural repairs
Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) is enhancing the U.S. Navy’s F-16 fleet by introducing two major capabilities: the application of Uniform Have Glass (UHG) coating and the establishment of a vital structural repair line for the Canopy Sill Longeron (CSL).
The new UHG coating, applied to F-16s at FRCSW, reduces the aircraft's radar cross-section, making them more challenging adversaries for Navy pilot training. This advanced coating allows the F-16s to better simulate modern threat aircraft, providing Navy pilots with more realistic and demanding training scenarios. In addition to its tactical benefits, the UHG coating is highly durable, reducing the need for future maintenance and corrosion control, and ensuring these critical training assets remain available for longer periods.
Simultaneously, FRCSW has addressed a critical structural issue by developing the capability to repair and replace the Canopy Sill Longeron (CSL)—a key component connecting the cockpit to the airframe. This intensive repair process restores the F-16's structural integrity, ensuring safe and extended operation. Developed in close coordination with the U.S. Air Force, the CSL repair capability currently supports C model aircraft, with plans to expand to D models later this year.
By bringing both advanced coatings and complex structural repairs in-house, FRCSW has positioned itself as a comprehensive support hub for the F-16 fleet. These dual advancements not only enhance the safety, survivability, and realism of Navy training but also ensure that F-16s can return to service more quickly and efficiently. The successful implementation of these programs underscores FRCSW’s commitment to sustaining joint-service aviation readiness and providing world-class support to the fleet.
