U.S. and allied forces joined academic and industry partners Sept. 17-23 to conduct Gray Flag 2024, an annual test event hosted by Naval Test Wing Pacific and VX-9 at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, California.

This year, more than 3,000 personnel from the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force participated in Gray Flag to conduct more than 60 test initiatives. The complex event featured approximately 600 aircraft sorties and more than 26 unique systems under test on the ground.

Five years after two earthquakes damaged several China Lake Propulsion Laboratory facilities, and three years after the first shovels of dirt heralded the beginning of a new CLPL era, the Carl Halsey Ordnance Test Support and Technical Services Lab opened its doors in a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 11.

The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division team delivered a crucial mission data file ahead of schedule, significantly accelerating the normal production timeline to support Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 314 aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). 

In this decisive decade, marked by global uncertainty, how does the U.S. Navy prepare for the evolving landscape of modern warfare — all while maximizing efficiency and minimizing costs? The answer lies within the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division. There, the Threat Target Systems Department (TTSD) showcased its innovation, resourcefulness, and operational effectiveness during the recent Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2024 exercise, including a live-fire sinking exercise of the decommissioned USS Tarawa (LHA 1).

Machine oil soaked into a wooden floor.

The smells of what came before – and would come again.

In July 2019, a pair of major earthquakes shattered the peace in the Indian Wells Valley, causing extensive damage at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and the surrounding communities. Five years later – almost to the day – three facilities re-opened: the Machine Shop, Chemistry Lab, and Environmental Lab.

On April 23, a breezy, overcast Tuesday, military and civilian members of the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force gathered on the beach at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu in Southern California, to jointly commemorate Anzac Day.

In April, a BQM-177 subscale, high subsonic aerial target launched in support of operations at Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division’s China Lake Range, but it wasn’t just any launch. It was number 200 for the Pacific Target and Marine Operations team.

It was also a massive endeavor requiring a huge cross-site, cross-functional coordination challenge. A symphony working together in harmony.

And if this test event was a symphony, the test managers were the conductors.

Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division held a dedication ceremony April 17 at Point Mugu, California, to commemorate the EA-6B Prowler's nearly five decades of service as the premier electronic attack platform for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Nearly 600 industry and government leaders in electronic warfare gathered for the 51^st Collaborative Electronic Warfare Symposium at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, California, March 12-14.

The annual symposium, jointly hosted by Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division and the Association of Old Crows under a co-sponsorship agreement, focuses on collaboration and innovation in the world of electronic warfare and brings together government and industry partners from across the country.
