Window maintenance will begin this April at the RADM William A. Moffett Building (2272) at NAS Patuxent River. There will be two projects that include repairing the leaking windows and panels on the exterior of the building and then minor cosmetic interior repairs in the atrium.
According to Dan Patterson, Project Manager for the Public Works Department here at Patuxent River, scaffolding will be erected outside the building and workers from Iron Eagle (a certified 8a, service-disabled veteran and Native American owned company from N.Y.), will begin necessary exterior repairs and resealing of the building’s atrium skylight, perimeter windows and pre-cast concrete wall panels.
Representatives from the company were on site late last December, measuring and taking pictures of the damage.
Resealing the windows and concrete panels should be complete by the end of September, but is only the first part of the project, according to Lt. James Alger, Project Manager for the atrium interior repair project. When repairs have been completed on the outside of the building, another work crew from Kellogg, Brown and Root Services (the Navy’s emergency construction capabilities contractor) will begin fixing the minor water damage approximately 75 feet above the atrium floor.
“We have interior damage to the drywall (in the atrium)” said Alger. “This is not a safety issue yet – it’s mostly aesthetics – but it needs to be repaired.”
The interior work in the atrium, which will be done at night, will take approximately two months to complete. During that time scaffolding will be set up in the atrium.
“We’re having the work done at night so we can minimize the impact on work in the building,” said Alger. The scaffolding will be roped off to minimize safety risks during work hours.
While the repairs are being made the atrium will be cleared of all exhibits.
