NAVAIR graduated 72 participants from its Senior Executive Management Development Program (SEMDP) during a command-wide video teleconferencing ceremony on November 7 at the RADM William A. Moffett Building atrium on Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.

Speakers for the event were VADM Wally Massenburg, NAVAIR Commander; Gary Kurtz, NAVAIR Deputy Assistant Commander for Corporate Operations; and Jennifer Altomare, Director of the Career Development Office.

“You 72 graduates are among the dedicated and talented individuals who will play a key role in securing NAVAIR’s future as a reliable, cost-wise provider of aircraft and aviation weapons systems for our Fleet Warfighters,” said Massenburg. “I want you to know that I understand and appreciate the self-analysis that brought you down the path of commitment, and ultimately to your place in this audience, among your equally dedicated counterparts who share the vision of delivering the right force, with the right readiness, at the right cost, at the right time . . . today, tomorrow and in the future.”

SEMDP was created in 1980 as a flagship leadership development program. The flexible program allows participants three-to-five years of part-time work to complete course requirements. Those requirements include business etiquette, networking, balancing work and home life, and defining personal leadership styles.

“That’s what SEMDP does for NAVAIR and the Naval Aviation Enterprise,” said Massenburg. “It identifies our very best people so that we can employ them to their maximum potential, working on things that serve the greater good – the best interests of our brave men and women in uniform.”

The NAVAIR Leadership Program (NLDP) was created in 2005 with the merger of SEMDP and AIRSpeed Black Belt training. NLDP retains the critical leadership learning of SEMDP, while adding the vital productivity learning of an AIRSpeed Black Belt to better prepare participants for future leadership roles.

NLDP is a full-time, two-year leadership preparation program that started its first class in September. It will gradually replace SEMDP with the last “overlap” participants graduating in 2009.

“So what do we, as leadership, expect of you?” Massenburg challenged the graduates. “Your job as leaders is to inspire improvement, to motivate action and to harness the energy and talent of those in your charge for the greater good of Naval Aviation.”
