The NAVAIR Lakehurst Aircraft Wiring Support Equipment Commodity (AWSEC) Team recently received an award from the Defense Standardization Program Office (DSPO) for outstanding contributions to the Department of Defense during the last fiscal year.

NAVAIR’s AWSEC Team developed the Aircraft Wiring Information System, a comprehensive, hierarchical database that defines complete wiring system configurations down to connectors, contacts and other wiring components. It is used for nearly all Navy and Marine Corps tactical aircraft and allows repair tooling, specifications and processes to be standardized. Engineering changes or logistics support analysis performed on one aircraft’s wiring system can be readily analyzed for potential implications on other aircraft.

The team’s standardization efforts have reduced the proliferation of tools and support equipment and realized a total cost avoidance of $15.9 million. The effort has also resulted in a 10 percent reduction over three years in maintenance man-hours on unscheduled maintenance, troubleshooting and associated costs.

Members of the AWSEC Team are: Leah Boise, Gail Edwards, William Peck, Robert Petrie, and Benjamin Yearwood.

Since 1987, DSPO has recognized individuals and organizations that have effected significant improvements in quality, reliability, readiness, cost reduction and interoperability through standardization. Their mission is to identify, influence, develop, manage and provide access to standardization processes, products, and services for warfighters and the acquisition and logistics communities. The program promotes interoperability, assists in reducing total ownership costs and sustains readiness. Over the years, the nomination guidelines have changed to emphasize specific programs or recognize those who have best implemented major new policy initiatives.
