Naval Air Depot Jacksonville Presented Calendar Year 2005 Aviation Safety Award
By Judy Hartman, Public Affairs Specialist

On Monday, June 26, Commanding Officer Captain John Scanlan presented Lieutenant Pete Amendolare with the Naval Air (NAVAIR) Systems Command Calendar Year (CY) 2005 Aviation Safety Award. Lieutenant Amendolare, depot aviation safety officer, provided daily leadership by coordinating a highly effective Aviation Safety Program that included safety standdowns, command job hazard assessments, and developing Operational Risk Management (ORM) worksheets used by flight crews and maintenance personnel. Although Lieutenant Amendolare accepted this award, it is a tribute to all the employees of NAVAIR Depot Jacksonville.
For the fifth time in seven years, the Depot has been selected as the winner of this prestigious award. NAVAIR Depot Jacksonville is proud to have closed out CY05 with a remarkable 39 years and 27,969.5 flight hours of Class A/B mishap-free flying.
This accomplishment is especially remarkable considering the extensive repairs aircraft receive at the Depot, to make them carrier worthy again. Some examples of these repairs are extensive sheet metal repairs made because of corrosion from salt water, wing replacement, and the upgrade of aircraft electronic systems. After these repairs are made, the aircraft is reassembled and functional operational checks are performed. Depot pilots perform the test flights and when all systems check out, the aircraft is painted and returned to the Fleet. All to support the warfighter, who is fighting the war on terrorism.
The goal of the NAVAIR Safety Program is to increase readiness throughout the Navy by reducing aircraft systems damage and personnel injuries caused by product deficiencies. In addition, NAVAIR personnel are protected through proactive safety awareness and ORM.
That safety goal has been met, as evidenced by the products completed for the Fleet. Safety and quality are more than just words. To the artisans of NAVAIR Depot Jacksonville, they are a way of life.
