The NAVAIR Office of CIO/AIR 7.2 is announcing the release of its automated Information Technology (IT) Approval tool. This tool replaces the previously paper-based IT Approval and IT Spend Plan forms with an online tool accessible via the MyNAVAIR portal. The tool offers numerous enhancements including electronic workflow, e-mail notifications, electronic signatures and a customized dashboard showing real-time status of packages in review and an archive of those that have been approved.

Jim Russell, the NAVAIR AIRSpeed Black Belt assigned to the project, is working with the CIO Office to reduce costs and total process cycle time, while increasing the number of correctly completed IT Approval requests.

Kathy Steele, Deputy CIO for NAVAIR and Project Sponsor stated, “As an outcome of the project, we identified the constraints and bottlenecks in our process, which enabled us to better understand where and how our customers were being impacted. The solution to lengthy, confusing forms was to create a Web-enabled, electronically work-flowed, user-friendly, tool with electronic signature capability that can be used by anyone at NAVAIR who requires an IT Approval.” Ms. Steele added, “The new tool consolidates numerous site-based databases into a single SQL (Structured Query Language) database, which will improve tracking ability and help us to meet the Navy’s goal of better management of IT expenditures.”

The IT Approval/IT Spend Plan process ensures that all IT, including platform IT in weapons and weapons systems programs, is managed effectively and complies with congressionally mandated statutory and regulatory requirements.
