The NAVAIR Aviation Safety Department recently launched a training initiative developed to save lives both on and off the job.

“NAVAIR is following the Chief of Naval Operations Instruction 3500.39A. By implementing formal classroom and online operational risk management training,” says Cmdr. Kevin Holland, NAVAIR aviation safety officer. “The principles of ORM are an important foundation for safe training and every day operations within NAVAIR. NAVAIR is aligning with the Navy-wide ORM program.”

According to Holland, ORM is not only applicable and required training for those directly working in aviation, but is an essential tool for all personnel. “Each NAVAIR supervisor and employee is required to complete the online ORM training course, regardless of their job function.” NAVAIR flying activities are required to have an ORM program manager, who will be responsible for making ORM an everyday part of operations.

The beauty of ORM is its relevance to every day life. “ORM is a systematic process for managing risk,” says Holland. “It isn’t just a safety or aviation related program, it can be used in all aspects of the work and home environment.”

While uncertainty and risk are inherent in the nature of the military, learning the ORM program will provide NAVAIR personnel with the tools to balance and evaluate risk with opportunity and to take decisive action.

The courses can be accessed by logging in on the secure website, https://www2.cnap.navy.mil. For more information about the ORM training program, call the NAVAIR Aviation Safety Department at (301) 757-2244, or email [email protected].
