On June 20, 2002, the Naval Air Depot (NAVAIR Depot Jax) Jacksonville, FL, earned the prestigious Aerospace Standard AS9100 certification. NAVAIR Depot Jax received certification for AS9100 (Revision A), the latest version of the standard, after a thorough evaluation by independent auditors. AS9100 characterizes what a quality management system in the Aerospace industry should be.
After receiving ISO 9001 certification in November 2001, the Depot set out to prove that its quality management system excells in aviation and aerospace processes, as well as industrial manufacturing. The Depot’s ten Strategic Business Teams (SBTs), including the management competencies, were evaluated during the certification process. This is a major accomplishment for any aerospace facility, as it proves commitment to consistency and stability of processes, a focus on customer service, reduced costs, and global market visibility. It also demonstrates the Depot’s commitment to doing every job right the first time, every time, and continually improving its performance in support of the Warfighter. At NAVAIR Depot Jax, “Quality Comes First.” The ISO 9001 and AS9100 certifications cover the Depot’s aircraft maintenance, repair, overhaul, and modification services of military aircraft, engines, aeronautical components and electrical systems including maintenance, repair, engineering, manufacturing, inspection, testing, logistics, design, analysis, and support.
The Depot is the first Navy command to receive AS9100 certification. Rick Delp, director of quality and the ISO Depot management representative stated, “This is a natural step in our commitment to Continuous Improvement. Being certified to the higher AS standard clearly sends the message to the world, the Navy, and most importantly our customers, the Warfighter, that we are serious about producing quality products.”
Over the past three years, the Depot has made tremendous progress in working to create a facility that focuses on continuous improvement through employee empowerment and involvement. This process has allowed the workforce to focus on the process, make improvements, and standardize procedures. Clearly documented, process-focused procedures ensure the Depot’s ability to provide consistent and repeatable performance. A robust and effective continuous improvement program empowers all employees to affect change and develop corrective and preventive action plans.
The Depot’s mission is to provide a full range of the high quality maintenance, engineering, and logistic support services to the Fleet at a competitive price. ISO 9000/AS9100 is a never-ending process requiring continuous upgrades and audits. Receiving these certifications demonstrates the Depot’s commitment to meeting that mission.
