Two NADEP Cherry Point Production Department employees were honored at the 18th Annual North Carolina Department of Labor Apprenticeship and Training Forum held in Research Triangle Park, Raleigh, May 2. The depot’s Student Career Experience Program (SCEP), known as Co-op, also received an award.

Baxter R. Owens was selected as the Department of Labor’s Outstanding Third Year Apprentice based on his ability to perform tasks with a minimum of direction, his ability to work well as an individual and as a member of a team, his management potential, and his willingness to lead other trainees in areas of work experience and trade theory.

Clayton E. Brass III was selected as the Department of Labor’s Outstanding Fourth Year Apprentice based on his ability to perform journeyman mechanic work, his desire to meet or exceed operational time standards, his “can-do” professional attitude, his educational achievements, his community volunteer work, his willingness to pass on personal experiences and knowledge without hesitation, his exceptional work record, and his dedication to his trade and the depot.

Brass holds an AAS degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology and a Federal Aviation Administration Airframes and Powerplant license. He is currently in pursuit of a BS degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is also a coach and mentor to members of Rosewood High School.

After competing with training programs from across the state, the NADEP Co-op Program was the first recipient of the Department of Labor’s Outstanding On-the-Job Training Award. Dwayne Oglesby of the Employee Development Division accepted the award on behalf of the depot.
