If you are enrolled in a college class, or are thinking about taking courses in the future, you know that furthering your education demands a lot of time – and a lot of money.

Figures released by the nonprofit College Board, best known as the owner of the SAT college entrance exam, show that tuition and fees at four-year public institutions now average $4,081, a rise of 5.8 percent over last year. Tuition and fees at four-year private colleges rose an average of 5.8 percent to $18,273 for this year.

If you are a graduate or undergraduate engineering student there is assistance available through a scholarship program from the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE).

Scholarship awards of $2500 for undergraduate students and $3500 for graduate students are being made available for the 2003-2004 academic year.

ASNE sponsors the program to encourage students to enter the field of naval engineering and to provide support to naval engineers seeking advanced education in the field. Programs of study include naval architecture, marine, mechanical, civil, aeronautical, electrical and electronic engineering and the physical sciences.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens and demonstrate a genuine interest in a career in naval engineering. Scholarships apply only to the last year of a full-time or co-op undergraduate program or to one year of graduate study.

The deadline for application for scholarships is February 15, 2003.
