The heroic reaction to the recent devastating fires in Southern Calif. is a testament to the teamwork required when a disaster strikes. On Wednesday, Nov. 5 there will be a planned opportunity for federal, state, and local agencies, including the military, to work together during a different type of disaster…a Homeland Security training exercise using simulated terrorist threat in a maritime environment at the Port of Hueneme.

The exercise, called Asymmetric Warfare Intiative-03 (AWI-03), will encompass multi-agency tactical and operational elements to oppose a replicated maritime threat to Ventura County. Agencies participating will include the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, NAVAIR Point Mugu Weapons Division, U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Naval Base Ventura County, Ventura County Fire Department, and the Calif. Department of Public Health plus several others.

The purpose is to enable local, regional, state and federal agencies to prepare, coordinate and respond effectively as a cohesive team in the event of a real attack. Designated areas on the military side of the port will be closed to the public to insure safety for all participants.

The public may hear low noises, see plumes of smoke and experience increased activity at the intersections of Ventura Road and Pleasant Valley Road entering Naval Base Ventura County property, where the exercise will be held.
