Petroglyph Escort Training Class Scheduled
NAVAIR Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake -- On Saturday, Sept. 6, the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake will hold a Petroglyph Escort Training Class for those interested in leading petroglyph tours. The classroom portion of the training will take place at the Maturango Museum, 100 E. Las Flores Blvd., starting at 8 a.m. Environmental, security and administrative issues will be addressed; and a brief discussion of the archaeology, terminology of petroglyphs, and the history of the Coso rock Art National Historic Landmark will be conducted. Immediately following the classroom portion, the group will go up to Little Petroglyph Canyon to finish training. The class will end around 2 p.m.
Space is limited, and reservations for the class are required. To reserve a space, call Peggy Shoaf at 939-1683 or e-mail her at [email protected]. You must be a U.S. citizen to become a Petroglyph tour guide.
All tours going into Little Petroglyph Canyon require two Command-approved escorts – people who have successfully completed the Petroglyph Escort Training and are on the active roster. It is the guides’ responsibility to assist the Navy in protecting these valuable nationally important historical resources, as well as assisting in protecting the Station’s security.
