Dr. Helen Griffith prepares to deliver her remarks Jan. 12 during the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration held in the Commander, Naval Air Forces auditorium on Naval Air Station North Island. Griffith, who is the executive director of E3 Civic High School in San Diego, served as guest speaker of the event that was hosted by Naval Air Systems Command and the African-American Pipelines Advisory Team, North Island. The holiday honoring Dr. King is observed the third Monday of each January. President Ronald Reagan signed legislation in November 1983 to create the holiday, which was first acknowledged in 1986.
