Union starts scholarship program

The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers Local 16 has established a college scholarship for children of Naval Air Depot North Island employees. The Zena Wood Memorial Scholarship – named for Zena Wood, a production controller at Naval Air Deport North Island who died two years ago, will be awarded biannually, according to IFPTE President Gary Hilbers.
The first recipient of the $500 scholarship is Shawn-Leigh Wood, daughter of Roger Wood, now a former NADEP North Island employee, and the late Zena Wood. Shawn-Leigh is attending Southwestern College in Chula Vista and intends to pursue an education in the field of computers.
To apply for the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college, community college or certified trade school and must be a full-time student. There is no grade point average requirement or consideration, nor is the scholarship limited to any particular course of study, Hilbers said. Future recipients will be selected by random drawing.
