Guppy swallows Tomcat

Archived Body

NASA’s Super Guppy seems to swallow this F-14 during loading at Naval Air Depot North Island. The Tomcat was damaged when it broke away from its mooring during a rough storm at sea aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). NADEP North Island artisans disassembled the aircraft to get its weight under 28,000 pounds so it could be airlifted aboard the Super Guppy and flown to Naval Air Depot Jacksonville, Fla., where it will be repaired and reassembled. NADEP North Island personnel are driving three flatbeds with the Tomcat’s wings, engines and other equipment to Florida. Photos by Joe Feliciano
