NAVAIR PATUXENT RIVER, Md. — The "Clipper" is the Navy’s official name for its new C-40A aircraft. The C-40A is a Boeing 737-700C (Convertible) model that can be used to carry both passengers and cargo around the world in support of battle group operations.
The U.S. Naval Reserve is the first customer for the newest member of the Boeing Next-Generation 737 family. The Naval Reserve is purchasing the aircraft to replace its fleet of C-9 airlifters.
The Clipper’s interior can be set up in three configurations: an all-passenger version with seats for 121 passengers, an all-cargo configuration capable of carrying up to eight pallets of cargo, or a combination, "combi", version that can accommodate up to three cargo pallets and 70 passengers.
The Navy has ordered five C-40A Clippers for its Navy Unique Fleet Essential Airlift Replacement Aircraft program. The first two C-40A Clippers are currently undergoing Federal Aviation Administration certification testing at Boeing Field in Seattle, Wash.
Deliveries will begin in early 2001.
