NAVAL AIR WARFARE CENTER WEAPONS DIVISION, CHINA LAKE, Calif. - Rear Adm. Mike Moran, NAWCWD commander, presented Derrick Hu with a Small Business Statutory Goal Achievement Award for fiscal 2012 on behalf of Sean Crean, Department of the Navy’s Office of Small Business Programs director, during a ceremony Oct. 9 at China Lake.

Hu, the deputy director for the NAWCWD Office of Small Business Programs, accepted the award on behalf of his team for achieving the 3 percent service-disabled veteran-owned small business (SDVOSB ) statutory goal.

“This is great recognition for something that’s not easily accomplished,” Moran said. “It’s not just about meeting a goal it’s about getting the right folks who are qualified.”

In 2004, President George W. Bush issued Executive Order 13360 declaring that a minimum of 3 percent of all government contracts must go to SDVOBs. This is the first achievement for NAWCWD since the SDVOSB statutory goal was enacted. The NAWCWD OSBP also met the 3 percent goal for fiscal 2013.

“We are very proud of this award,” Hu said. “Service-disabled veteran-owned businesses are serving our citizens twice. They served once in the military protecting our country, and now they are serving as entrepreneurs maintaining and building our country.”

Hu acknowledged the command effort that made this possible.

“The credit for this achievement goes to NAWCWD’s acquisition personnel who view SDVOSBs, and other small businesses, as the best solution for our warfighter,” he said.
