The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division recently selected AWF1(NAC/AW) Charles B. Davis as the 2012 NAWCWD Sailor of the Year.

“This really means a lot,” Davis said. “It means a lot of pride for my command, my family and myself.”

Davis is currently assigned to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 30 at NAWCWD Point Mugu. He serves as the leading petty office for VX-30’s Operations Department where he is directly responsible for the daily and weekly scheduling of 10 aircraft, 70 pilots, naval flight officers and naval aircrewman. He is also as a flight engineer for C-130s, and a flight engineer instructor for P-3s.

In addition, Davis is VX-30’s command fitness leader, and led 104 Sailors to complete the 2012 fitness assessments with zero failures. As the squadron’s CPR coordinator, Davis conducted five classes, which qualified 40 personnel in CPR. He also volunteered more than 120 hours of his time leading the VX-30 Morale, Welfare and Recreation team in eight fundraising events that were successful in not only raising funds but squadron morale as well.

Davis has been with VX-30 for three years and is preparing to transfer to a squadron in Hawaii.

A native of Baton Rouge, La., Davis said he joined the Navy 13 years ago for two reasons – to better himself, and to serve his country. His current goals are to make chief and keep progressing in the Navy.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today with the support of my wife and two children,” Davis said. “Family remains my number one priority. They supply me with the drive and ambition to keep working hard and succeed.”

To the younger Sailors, Davis advises, “work hard and take pride in your work.”

Davis’ dedication and work ethic led him to previous awards including the Navy League SOY, and the Junior SOY while serving with Patrol Squadron 4. Before earning the NAWCWD SOY award, he was named VX-30’s Sailor of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2012, and then its SOY. Davis will represent NAWCWD in the NAVAIR SOY competition in January.

“He’s going to represent us well,” said Rear Adm. Paul Sohl, NAWCWD commander. “I’m so proud of his ability to maintain that dedicated and strong work ethic, and be that Sailor of the Year who we hold upon a pedestal.”

The Sailor of the Year program was established in 1972, by then-Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and then-Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Whittet, to recognize an individual Sailor who best represented the ever-growing group of dedicated professional Sailors at each command and ultimately the Navy. When the program began, only the Atlantic and Pacific Fleet Sailors were recognized. Within 10 years, the Sailor of the Year program was expanded to include the shore establishment and Navy Reserve Sailors.
