WD scientists, engineers showcase STEM at local school
Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division scientists and engineers held a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Showcase at Sherman E. Burroughs High School on May 4 in Ridgcrest, Calif.
The annual showcase demonstrated real world problems and solutions devised by NAWCWD scientists and engineers to spark students’ interest in STEM careers. NAWCWD employees set up several STEM displays that included demonstrations and hands-on engagement. Each display was accompanied by a NAWCWD scientist or engineer to explain the points of interest and also be available to answer questions.
Students from Munroe and Murray Junior High Schools also participated in the STEM showcase this year.
NAWCWD Chemistry Department employees Dr. Matt Davis, Dr. Ben Harvey, Dr. Lee Cambrea, and Dr. Heather Meylemans gave the “Chemistry in the Toy Store” demonstration. NAWCWD employees Aaron Scott, Tom Kerr and Ben Nissan manned the “Catapult 3-Point Challenge” display. Chris Hoskins and Ed Cornell led the “Height Jumping and Strike Force” workshop. Nick Hageman, Alen Dutton and Greg Kapeles led the “Flying High” workshop. Phil Land, Gary Beckstrom, Thea Cornell and Trent Trepanier hosted the “Standing Waves and Sound” demonstration. Rich Perrine, Matt Garcia, Jonith Bullock, Kyle Donohue and Shaun Hull of the Sidewinder program led the “Missile Guidance and Control System” workshop. Michael Palmer, Lee Robinson, Kyle Blades and Brian Kajiwara led the “Fighter Attack Sensors” demonstration. Samantha Matthews also supported the event.
