In 1989, Clara Smith came to China Lake with her husband John, a retired U.S. Navy Command Master Chief. While she and her husband traveled the world, Clara worked in many military uniform shops, including Kirkland AFB, New Mexico and California naval bases at Point Mugu, Lemoore and China Lake.

Clara retired from serving with Marines and Sailors on 9 March 2006. “I plan to relax and spend time with my family and grandson,” says Clara, with a great big smile just like the one we have all come to know.

The Marines at China Lake have received the best service from Clara in the time she has been here. In recognition of that service, the Marine Aviation Detachment’s commanding officer, Colonel Mark Bamberger and First Sergeant Kenneth Rocquemore visited the uniform shop to show their appreciation on behalf of the Marines.

“We are honored to be a part of the China Lake team. You have done a tremendous job supporting our Marines and working very hard to ensure that unique uniform items were made available to all the Marines in a timely manner. Thank you for a job well done,” said Bamberger as he presented a plaque to Clara.

Simon Lumpton, Clara’s manager for the past eight months, smiled as pictures were taken of Clara and her new plaque. “I’ve enjoyed working with her. She’s been solid. I’m definitely going to miss her,” said Lumpton.

The knowledge that Clara shared with everyone she has worked with will truly be put to the test. Sandy Walker has been Clara’s co-worker for the past two years. “I’ve learned a lot from her,” Walker said. “I hope that I can carry on all she has taught me. I’m really going to miss her.” The Marines at China Lake are going to miss her as well, and wish Clara and her family the best as she retires to Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
