Recent natural disasters and severe hurricanes have increased the interest in the study of hurricane abatement. Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division’s Technical Library is sponsoring their eighth presentation in their series, “Have I Got a Story for You!”

Guest speaker Pierre St. Amand will explain the history of weather modification and its uses on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the tech library, Bldg. 02496, inside the north gate of Michelson Lab compound.

St. Amand and his colleagues who worked at the China Lake Naval Weapons Center’s (NWC) Earth and Planetary Sciences Division reviewed work conducted in the 1880’s and extended it to fit the knowledge of the 1950’s. The NWC researchers then developed concepts, techniques, and hardware successfully used in hurricane abatement, fog control, and drought relief.

St. Amand saw the progression of events-- from testing in the Panamint Mountains to strategic implementation over the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the Vietnam War.
