MATLAB and NAVAIR

In September 2003, NAVAIR announced that it had standardized on The MathWorks family of products for data analysis, visualization, modeling, and simulation. By deploying MATLAB® and Simulink® as their core software platform, NAVAIR engineers can share research easily, cut significant time from the data analysis processes, and better meet the technology needs across the naval fleet.

In an effort to support this broad-based implementation of MathWorks tools, the MathWorks/MATLAB User Community has been established on NAVAIR’s corporate portal, MyNAVAIR. Open to all users with a MyNAVAIR account, the community enables MATLAB users to share software routines, discuss projects, ask questions, and learn about upcoming events. Several MathWorks staff members actively participate in the community, which supports collaboration between NAVAIR users and MathWorks product experts. Bruce Feldman, who has been coordinating NAVAIR's MATLAB initiative, said “NAVAIR has hundreds of MATLAB users spread across all of NAVAIR's engineering sites. The portal provides a single entry point for MATLAB users from all of NAVAIR's sites to be able to exchange code, and post questions to other users. Because the MathWorks also has access, the portal provides a convenient way for NAVAIR's users to ask questions and provide feedback to the MathWorks. The site also has several users from other Navy and Air Force organizations, so we are hoping that the portal fosters communications with users outside of NAVAIR."

In addition to participating in discussions, The MathWorks posts announcements and maintains a calendar of events on the site. Users will also find a repository for documents, software routines, and NAVAIR developed and managed software that can be downloaded by any NAVAIR user. The site also contains MATLAB installation instructions for NMCI users as well as self-installation for NMCI developer seat users and RDT&E environment users across all of NAVAIR’s sites. Instructions for classified network users at PAX are also included. (WD classified network licenses are not yet available, but are under discussion.)

In order to join the community, simply log onto MyNAVAIR, place your cursor on the “Communities” tab and click on “Edit Communities.” Then click on the “NAVAIR Wide” folder name and select the check box for “MathWorks/MATLAB users.” To finish, click on “Add to My Memberships” and choose “Finish.” You can now access MathWorks/MATLAB under the “Communities” tab.
