Parking Changes Come to IPT Building

Parking changes have begun for Building 2272 (Rear Admiral William A. Moffet Building) in an effort to create more general parking spaces and increase handicap parking. The changes will also provide building visitors with a convenient two-hour parking lot. According to Terri Rea, NAVAIR Flag Secretary, modifications inside the parking garage and around the building are intended to more efficiently use the reserved parking spaces on the ground level.
“Designated reserved parking spaces assigned to individuals have been rescinded and replaced by a color-coded first-come, first-served permit system,” she said. “The permits will enable utilization of parking spaces during the travel periods of those with reserved spaces.”
Blue parking permits have been distributed to Flag officers and Senior Executive Service civilians only. Gold parking permits are being dispersed to A/B codes, program managers and their deputies and positional level II personnel in the building.
The changes, which began this week, include establishing a two-hour visitor parking lot to the side of the garage.
“Those 36 spots will no longer be for general parking,” said Rea, “but we’re creating 61 additional general spaces in the garage by reducing the number of reserved spaces.”
Overall, Rea said, the plan will add 114 general parking spaces and 12 handicap parking spaces (an increase of 11 over the required number).
“I feel the two-hour visitor parking lot is the answer to a number of complaints we’ve received in the past,” said Rea. “A lot of first-time visitors aren’t prepared for the trek from the back of the parking lot while carrying all their presentation materials.”
Construction and widening of Buse Road in front of Bldg. 2272 has led to a redesign of the building’s south (side) lot and a planned re-opening of the front circle for parking. According to Rea, road construction in front of the south lot will create an easier entrance and egress point. That lot will be a discretionary/VIP parking area controlled by competencies and PEO’s.
The front circle area is also undergoing changes. A gated entrance will maintain security for the building while allowing senior personnel controlled access to parking.
“Changes to the front circle and the south lot are part of Phase II,” Rea said. “The primary focus right now is the garage and visitor lot.”
Colored parking permits are being distributed via the C-codes, and according to Rea, security will ticket those without permits properly displayed. “Everyone is going to have to be responsible to help report violations,” she said.
