Sean Maher, an aircraft electrician on Fleet Readiness Center East’s (FRCE) UH-1N production line, connects a battery-powered ground power unit (GPU) while conducting checks on a UH-1N helicopter. FRCE’s UH-1N production line is swapping out diesel-powered GPUs for battery-powered GPUs, becoming the first adapter of this technology within the Naval Aviation community. Depot officials say the battery-powered GPUs minimize energy consumption, increase efficiency and enhance workplace safety.
