Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division - Orlando
Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) Operations (Ops) and Maintenance (Maint.)
The MRTS 3D® EMALS application provides high fidelity operator and maintenance catapult system training for the Launch Control Officer (LCO) and Launch Control Monitor (LCM) on the Integrated Catapult Control Station (ICCS), the Deck Edge Station (DES), and Center Deck Display (CDD) of the flight deck, Maintenance Workstations (MWS), and EMALS components in the Prime Power Interface Subsystem (PPIS), Energy Storage Subsystem (ESS), Power Conversion System (PCS), Launch Motor System (LMS), Energy Distribution System (EDS), and Launch Control Subsystem (LCS).
The instructor can pick 6 different types of aircraft and set the time of day in order to conduct day-time or night-time training. There are over 100 different faults the instructor can insert between the 5 different systems that make up the EMALS. This allows the group to conduct responsive checks to determine if a launch is able to proceed or be aborted.
EMALS provides familiarization, equipment location, fault troubleshooting, and operational procedure instruction. As a result, this minimizes requirements for onboard training while providing sailors the opportunity to learn, develop techniques, and improve necessary onboard skills in a safe environment. This application allows operators to conduct up to 60 different maintenance procedures between the 5 primary EMALs subsystems in accordance with the EMALS Interactive Electronics Technical Manual (IETM).
