VIRGINIA Emergency Diesel Generator (VA EDG) Operations Procedures (OPs) and Casualty Procedures (CPs)

This MRTS 3D® application provides a simulation of the Virginia-class Auxiliary Machinery Room and allows the operator perform start, run, and shutdown procedures of the Virginia-class Caterpillar EDG as well as train responsive actions in a dozen different casualty scenarios within a realistic shipboard environment. These procedures and scenarios all relate to the movement of the submarine, whether submerging or surfacing, as well as errors and faults that may come during operation. Operators are able to use various specialized tools and follow Maintenance Requirement Cards (MRCs) within a high-fidelity shipboard environment.

There are a total of 16 different fault scenarios which include different types of hard shutdowns, false start and recovery, flooded engine, black start operations, and faults related to various pressure, temperature, and system abnormalities across a variety of components.

A significant feature of this application is that operators may utilize a digital Diesel Generator Control Panel (DGCP). This allows the operator the ability to constantly monitor the running engine’s parameters to ensure they are in the nominal range of values. Lastly, the instructor has the ability to change values and/or variables in the environment to induce a variety of different casualty scenarios. This can be done by manipulating temperature values, pressure values, and the rate of change between the start and end values.
