688 Fairbanks Morris Emergency Diesel Generator (688 FM EDG) Operations Procedures (OPs) and Casualty Procedures (CPs) Training Effectiveness Evaluation Procedure (TEEP)

This MRTS 3D® application provides a simulation of the 688-class Auxiliary Machinery Room and allows the operator perform start, run, and shutdown procedures of the 688-class EDG as well as train responsive actions in a dozen different casualty scenarios within a realistic shipboard environment. It contains 3 operating procedures, 11 casualty scenarios, and 4 maintenance procedures. These procedures and scenarios all relate to the movement of the submarine, whether submerging or surfacing, as well as errors and faults that may come during operation.

The 688-class submarine utilizes an eight-cylinder Fairbanks Morse (FM) engine for which operators conduct more manual operations, such as manipulating generator load controls through a governor, to start up the engine. This application also has the ability to have the operator constantly monitor elements, such as oil temperature, to ensure system parameters are in the nominal range of values. The instructor also has the ability to change values in the system to induce a casualty scenario of their own by manipulating temperatures, pressure values, and the rate of change between values. Operators have more analog input through manipulation of fuel rack levers and valve alignment.

This application also includes a grading system through a concept called “Automating Measurement of Performances” (AMP). AMP assesses operators through two casualty scenarios on the 688 Diesel application. Assessments are completed by tracking metrics, such as responsiveness, actions, eye-tracking, and critical values upon casualty correction. Instructors can adjust grading weights, submit data to a Learning Management System (LMS) via xAPI, and enable tracking of operator performances over time, which allows school houses to note the strengths and weaknesses of training effectiveness.
