This is done by utilizing a hand-held gas sampling pump along with various detector tubes known as colorimetric tubes, where one can detect and measure hazardous gases and vapors by viewing the color change in the reagents within the tube that has a chemical reaction to the toxic substance present. By confirming the gas concentration, one can determine if it's safe to enter a particular space, and there are many applications including military.
