Prototyping, Instrumentation and Experimentation
The Prototyping, Instrumentation and Experimentation (PIE) provides solutions that meet requirements for all Navy research, development, test, and evaluation flight test programs helping to carry current and future aircraft systems from development through sustainment. With specialties in prototyping, fabrication, and flight-test instrumentation, PIE also collaborates on projects with the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and other defense foreign military sales programs.
Core Capabilities
PIE’s Aircraft Prototype Systems Division provides organic engineering and manufacturing as well as contract services that enable rapid delivery of quality airworthy prototypes, components, modifications, and installations to close emergent airborne capability gaps. Its portfolio ranges from single piece-part fabrication to system-of-systems aircraft integration on a wide range of platforms.
PIE's Aircraft Instrumentation designs, develops, integrates, operates, and maintains special flight test instrumentation and data acquisition systems for fixed-wing, rotary, and unmanned aircraft systems test and evaluation. Engineers and technicians specialize in advanced electrical system design, network telemetry, mechanical engineering and fabrication, and structural engineering and load testing for numerous airframes.
PIE also provides Aircraft Experimentation capabilities leveraging our expertise in prototyping and instrumentation. We support unique experiments involving fleet assets through live, virtual, and constructive test alongside industry partners to provide real-time, decision-quality data in a realistic battle environment. This capability provides opportunities for rapid prototype concepts, decreasing development time and increasing speed to the fleet.
