The NAWCAD Strategic Education Office (SEO) provides meaningful opportunities for students, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through outreach activities, students become more knowledgeable about career opportunities and the education needed to fill future positions with NAWCAD.
Educational Partnership Agreements made between federal agencies and educational institutions provide support and services to public and private school students in the southern Maryland region. The SEO offers a number of programs including:

The NAWCAD SEO coordinates field trips to enrich the curriculum of fourth through 12th-grade courses. Field trips provide students and teachers with the opportunity to meet scientists and engineers in the labs where they work.
A list of different sites allowing field trips is available upon request. The list of sites may be helpful in completing page 2 of the Program Request Form.
The NAWCAD Strategic Education Office also offers virtual tours and field trips. A list of virtual field trips is available upon request.

The NAWCAD SEO hosts two free camps for middle school students each summer. Each camp session has a capacity of 15 students and admissions are made on a first-come, first-serve basis with priority given to first-time participants.
Engineering Exploration Experience (E3) at Naval Air Station Patuxent River
The Engineering Exploration Experience (E3) camp is an introduction to various fields of engineering through hands-on activities, tours of engineering labs, and speaker panels. Eligible student participants must be U.S. citizens currently enrolled in fifth through eighth grades.
Computer Coding Camp (C3) at Naval Air Station Patuxent River
The Computer Coding Camp (C3) is an introduction to Raspberry Pi computing through hands-on experience coding in Scratch and Python, and includes tours of Navy labs that use computer coding. Eligible student participants must be U.S. citizens currently enrolled in sixth through eighth grades.

In Class Activities
The NAWCAD SEO engages in community outreach by providing guest speakers and demonstrations in school classrooms. To request a classroom speaker or activity in Calvert, Charles, or St. Mary’s County, Maryland, please complete pages 1 and 2 of the Program Request Formand email the completed form to [email protected]. On page 2 of the form, please indicate the topic, content standard, or concept that you are requesting for the guest speaker or demonstration. Please allow for a minimum of 6 weeks in order to schedule and plan the activity.

The NAWCAD SEO participates in local STEM festivals and events with hands-on demonstrations and activities.

Robotics Programs
NAWCAD scientists and engineers mentor and coach middle school FIRST Lego League teams and high school FIRST Tech Challenge teams. Teams are formed in partner schools for FIRST Robotics competitions.
Military and civilian federal employee mentors and coaches of FIRST Robotics teams in the southern Maryland tri-county region can apply for a DOD STEM FIRST grant around April of each year. Grant amounts vary depending in the type of team. For more information regarding the DOD STEM FIRST Robotics grants, please email [email protected].
