University & Community Engagement

The SEO provides additional opportunities for students to participate in creative and innovative activities that stimulate ideas which are competed on a local and national level. These opportunities facilitate growth in student ideas and the application of ideas to fulfill perceived limits and/or gaps in technical capabilities.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-Inspiring the Next Generation (STEM-ING)

The Patuxent Partnership and NAWCAD host a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-Inspiring the Next Generation (STEM-ING) annually. STEM-ING is designed for female middle school students in the southern Maryland tri-county region to raise awareness of STEM and STEM-related careers. The event is an opportunity for students to interact with positive STEM role models in their community and engage in hands-on workshops throughout the day.

STEM-ING began in 2009 and reaches over 100 students every year. The event is hosted at the St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

For additional information about the annual STEM-ING event including volunteer and student registration please visit www.stem-ing.org or email [email protected].

Southern Maryland Engineering Program (SMD-E)

The SMD-E program is a seamless pathway to a bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. The Southern Maryland Engineering Program is a partnership between NAWCAD, the University of Maryland at Southern Maryland (USMSM), the University of Maryland's (UMD) A. James Clark School of Engineering, and the College of Southern Maryland (CSM)

The program starts at CSM which offers an Associate of Science Engineering Degree to its students. Upon completion of this program, students may transfer with junior status to earn a Bachelor of Science degree at UMD. Students also have the opportunity to do an internship at NAWCAD with possible employment opportunity upon graduation and completion of program requirements. Students can also take classes in southern Maryland at CSM, then take classes at USMSM to complete their junior and senior classes with UMD.

Students enrolled in this program will typically have three classes per semester at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center and one class at UMD's College Park campus. An additional class may be taken online or through a distance education service.

NAWCAD and UMD have established a state-of-the-art engineering laboratory dedicated to support junior- and senior-level engineering courses at USMSM.
