NAWCAD Commander’s Awards honor innovation excellence across the command

The command recognized significant technical achievement during its 18th annual Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Commander’s and Innovation Awards at Patuxent River today.

“The teams and individuals honored today took on, and continue to tackle naval aviation’s greatest challenges,” said Rear Adm. John Lemmon, commander of NAWCAD. “Their efforts drive us toward realizing our imperatives to revolutionize readiness, increase lethality and develop our talent.” Lemmon is also assistant commander for research and engineering at Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR).

NAWCAD recognizes excellence, innovation at logistics awards ceremony

The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Logistics and Industrial Operations Department recognized members of its workforce during a ceremony on the Lakehurst side of base Dec. 6 for their innovation and dedication to supporting the fleet.

The 18th Annual Michael G. Simodejka Awards continued the tradition of honoring Michael G. Simodejka, the father of the NAVAIR logistics community and first civilian director of the Logistics Competency for the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD).

The United States Naval Test Pilot School trains the world’s finest developmental test pilots, flight officers, engineers, industry and foreign partners in full spectrum test and evaluation of aircraft and aircraft systems. The refined combination of classroom, simulation, inflight instruction and mentorship makes USNTPS the most prestigious flight test school in the world. It is the only source of rotary wing test pilots serving as the dedicated test pilot school of the U.S. Army. Notably, the competitive program has graduated more than 90 NASA astronauts to date.

Innovation Hub Opens at Patuxent River

NAWCAD Commander, Rear Adm. Shane Gahagan and Executive Director Leslie Taylor, opened the command’s new Innovation Hub (iHUB) during a ribbon cutting ceremony, Aug. 1.

The iHUB is a new makerspace created to foster and enhance the command’s organic talent in rapid response to Fleet process and technical problems. The facility features prototyping equipment, materials, technical support and training. It is also home to the FabLab, NAWCAD’s mobile suite of digital fabrication and rapid prototype machines.

21 graduate Project Management 101 at Point Mugu

Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division recognized 21 employees for completing the Project Management 101 program during a ceremony Aug. 9 at Point Mugu; 25 more will be honored in a ceremony at China Lake on Aug. 30.  

PM 101 is a locally developed, command-sponsored program that teaches key project management skills and tools. Participants, who can come from anywhere in the organization, complete 80 hours of training in seven classes. Since 2011, more than 550 people have participated in the program.

U.S. Navy holds ceremony to mark first dedicated UAS test squadron

The U.S. Navy commissioned its first Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) test and evaluation squadron during a ceremony Oct. 18 at Naval Air Station Patuxent River’s Webster Outlying Field.

The new unit, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (UX) 24, flies over 23 fixed and rotary wing UAS including the MQ-8 Fire Scout, RQ-20 Puma, RQ-21 Blackjack, RQ-26 Aerostar and a number of commercial systems.

During the ceremony, Cmdr. Matthew Densing officially assumed leadership of UX-24.

NAWCAD hosted a number of small businesses to discuss upcoming acquisition initiatives during an industry day Oct. 25 in California, Maryland. The command hosts informational events periodically to open communication, conduct market research and enhance its relationships with industry. Industry days are announced online via Federal Business Opportunities.

VX-20 welcomes new commanding officer

Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 20 welcomed its new commanding officer during a ceremony Oct. 25 in Patuxent River.

Capt. Thomas Tennant, commander of Naval Test Wing Atlantic, presided over the change of command where Col. Steven Puckett turned over leadership to Cmdr. Matthew Tharp.

“Achievements are hallmark of this squadron,” said Tennant. “Today we witness a continued legacy of excellent leadership passing through VX-20 – a squadron that has never lost sight of how it fits into Naval aviation.”

The U.S. Naval Test Pilot School held a graduation ceremony for Class 153 on Friday, June 8. Thirty-four students successfully completed the intense 11-month course of instruction and were designated as Engineering Developmental Test Pilots, Test Flight Officers and Test Engineers. Graduates included members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Army and Air Force, students from Canada, France, Italy and Spain, and engineers from NAWCAD.

NAVAIR team receives top environmental excellence award

The Naval Air Systems Command’s (NAVAIR) 4.3.4 Environment, Safety, and Occupational Health (ESOH) team received their Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Environmental Awards during a ceremony here, June 13.

The CNO Environmental Awards recognize Navy ships, installations, teams and individuals for their achievements in environmental stewardship on an annual basis. The Air 4.3.4 ESOH team’s award is in the Environmental Excellence in Weapon System Acquisition, Large Program category.
