CNO Policy Memorandum on Aircraft Safety System Avionics, 9 Nov 99, mandates the
installation of Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) equipment on
new and existing Navy aircraft. For passenger and troop carrying aircraft, the CNO
directs the use of commercial standard systems for comparable aircraft.
TCAS provides time-critical aural and visual warnings that cue appropriate pilot
responses to prevent Mid-Air collisions. A typical commercial TCAS II system consists
of a TCAS Processor, TCAS directional antennas, control panel, displays, Mode S/IFF
transponder, and Mode S/IFF transponder antennas.
Current customers include C-130T, C-2, KC-130F/R/T, UH-3, and U/VP-3A.
