FA-18F Tanking Pre-Contact: A VX-31 FA-18F crew concentrates intently as they prepare to engage their Super Hornet's refueling probe into the refueling drogue basket of a KC-130 during an aerial refueling session over the Mojave Desert. Aerial refueling is a highly perishable and exacting skill for naval aviators, who must regularly practice the technique to maintain proficiency. Aerial refueling is a core capability for Navy tactical jets as it extends both their operating range from the carrier and their persistence over the battlefield.July 2009, U.S. Navy photo by Cmdr.
