High Tech Work: Targets/Ranges (Air/Land/Sea)

Threats and Targets Department is an extremely exciting and diverse organization covering three basic
functional areas – Electronic Threat Simulators, Targets Engineering,
and Targets Operational Support. The Threats and Targets Department
employs people of widely ranging talents and educational backgrounds.
Electronic Threat Simulators
Develops
and deploys various lines of threat simulators that range in technology
from electro-optical to infrared to radio frequency. The
development of these systems is spread between China Lake and Point
Mugu while the deployment and operational support is simply world-wide.
Targets Engineering
Engineers and
technicians of many disciplines are employed in a variety of targets
engineering efforts. This work can range from vehicle &
control system modifications for unique customer requirements, to
specification and acquisition support for our sponsors to accident and
engineering investigations and fault analysis.
Targets Operational Support
This
function is also provided worldwide. On the East Coast the
operations are supported by our Patuxent River Division with
detachments permanently located at Dam Neck, Virginia, Norfolk,
Virginia, and Key West, Florida. These locations support the operation
of unmanned aerial targets, surface targets as well as many other
"manned" functions (ship sinking exercises, range clearance, Missile
Defense Agency target launches). Our West Coast operations are similar
and primarily supported out of Pt. Mugu. This team not only
provides aerial and surface targets for the US Fleet and the Army and
Air Force, but also provides extensive support to our foreign
allies. In addition, unique target developmental engineering
flight tests are performed on the West Coast.

The NAVAIR Range Department
The NAVAIR Ranges operate major test ranges and facilities on the East and West Coasts of the United States. These large, unencroached tracts of land, sea and air space provide a variety of terrain, including desert, mountain, littoral and open-ocean. NAVAIR schedules and operates these interoperable air, land and sea ranges, range instrumentation and associated facilities; and provides air vehicle and weapons systems modification and instrumentation.
NAVAIR assets include the Sea Range at Point Mugu, CA; the Land Range and Electronic Combat Range (ECR) at China Lake, CA; and the Atlantic Test Ranges at Patuxent River, MD. In addition to the physical test areas, NAVAIR also provides associated test article preparation and instrumentation, test facilities and associated threat environments, radar-cross-section measurements, specialized tracks, and interconnectivity with simulation and stimulation facilities and other major ranges.
NAVAIR's premiere test complexes provide test and evaluation and training support for Department of Defense, federal government agencies, commercial customers and Foreign Military Sales.
