Point Mugu - Ventura County

Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and some of the most bountiful agricultural land in Southern California, Point Mugu hosts one of the Department of the Navy's (DoN) premier sea ranges which includes San Nicolas Island. Located on the Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County, Point Mugu is within easy reach of costal communities such as Santa Monica to the south and Santa Barbara to the north. The Weapons Division at Point Mugu is hosted by the Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC).

The Point Mugu area is rich with wildlife. Seals can be seen lounging in the sun on the lagoons sandbar while dolphins and the occasional whale may be observed migrating up the coast. Ocean faring birds such as pelicans, egrets and common gulls can be seen in abundance, and on a clear day you can see the Channel Islands from the mainland.

The coastal communities of Ventura, Oxnard and Port Hueneme are just north of the Point Mugu gates. The city of Camarillo is a short drive inland and hosts a renowned premium outlet mall. Further inland is Moorpark and the mountain community of Ojai. Three community colleges and CSU Channel Islands are within easy reach of Point Mugu. The area around Point Mugu offers all of the amenities of comfortable living.

During World War II, Point Mugu became a training area for the Seabees at Port Hueneme. The Seabees put down a section of Marston Mat runway which became Point Mugu's first airstrip. In 1946 the Secretary of the Navy endorsed, and President Truman approved, the establishment of the Naval Air Missile Test Center at Point Mugu. Captain Albert N. Perkins was assigned as the Center's first commanding officer. Throughout it's 60 year history the facilities at Point Mugu have undergone many changes, but the high quality of the work has always remained constant.
