Facilities for Antenna & RCS Measurements

The Radar and Antenna Systems Division conducts measurements of the characteristics of antenna systems and avionics systems installed on partial to full-size airframes. These measurements are conducted from outdoor ranges at the Facilities for Antenna and RCS Measurements (FARM).


The outdoor ranges are configurable for several illuminator/test items at distances up to 1500 feet away. Measurements are made on antennas and avionics systems installed on partial model airframes or full-scale aircraft configurations to determine the effects of the airframe on their characteristics.


  • Evaluation of both antennas and complete avionics systems installed on or in a full-size aircraft
  • Remotely controlled illuminator towers can be positioned up to 1,500 feet away
  • Measurement of antenna radiation patterns, gain, phase, VSWR, and antenna-to¬-antenna isolation
  • Desired and jamming signal sources can be positioned for the technical evaluation of the avionics systems installed in the host airframe
  • Partial full scale mock-up measurements and communications antenna evaluations
  • Analog/ digital antenna pattern recording
