Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., is home to two of NAVAIR's logistics and industrial operations commands -- Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) and the Naval Air Technical Data & Engineering Service Command (NATEC).

Fleet Readiness Center Southwest

Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) is located at Naval Air Station North Island, “the birth place of naval aviation.” The Command provides comprehensive, quality support to our nation’s aviation warfighters through the overhaul, repair, and modification of Navy and Marine Corps front line tactical, logistical, and rotary-wing aircraft and their components.

FRCSW repairs and maintains Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, including the F/A-18 Hornet, AV-8B Harrier, H-60 Seahawk, H-53 Super Stallion, E-2C Hawkeye and C-2A Greyhound.


FRCSW’s mission is to provide top quality products and services at the best value in the fastest time. FRCSW accomplishes its mission by utilizing state of the art management systems including: Lean, Theory of Constraints, Six Sigma and best business practices (certified to ISO 9000, 9001 and 14001).

Products and Services 

FRCSW aircraft programs prove their value to the warfighter by repairing and returning to the Fleet F/A-18 Hornets, E-2 Hawkeye early warning aircraft, C-2A Greyhounds, SH-60 Seahawk multi-mission aircraft, Marine Corps AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters, UH-1 Huey general purpose helicopters, CH-53 Sea Stallion heavy lift helicopters, AV-8B Harrier VTOL aircraft, and the EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft.

FRCSW is the Navy’s lead facility performing overhaul, repair, modification and center barrel replacement (a unique capability designed, engineered and built here) for the F/A-18 Hornet.  FRCSW is also the sole Navy repair site of the LM-2500 turbine engine, which is used to power the Spruance-, Aegis-, Ticonderoga-, and Perry-class surface ships. To date, more than 390 engines and 250 power turbines have been serviced and returned to the Fleet. 

FRCSW’s Components program boasts repair capability to more than 11,700 unique components used on Navy and Marine frontline tactical and support aircraft. In 2008, the command produced more than 34,000 units for use by the Navy-wide supply system.

The depot’s Field Service provides rapid-response, on-site, depot-level repair and modification of squadron aircraft anywhere in the world ashore and aboard carriers at sea. The Voyage Repair Team overhauls aircraft catapult and arresting gear systems on all Pacific Fleet carriers and maintains aircraft and ship aviation support systems on all Pacific Fleet aviation-capable ships.

FRCSW’s In Service Support Center (ISSC) provides engineering and logistics expertise to many Navy assets including Service Life Extension Programs to enhance the readiness of aging aircraft. The Center operates the Navy Primary Standards Laboratory, providing calibration services worldwide at a level second only to those of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The ISSC’s Materials Engineering Laboratory provides a variety of services with its expertise in materials technologies, and has the Navy’s only aircraft tire engineering and laser tire testing capability.


With a work force of 4,425 personnel, FRCSW also includes 1,000 active-duty military personnel. The Command's highly skilled, talented, innovative, and dedicated employees have an average education level of 14 years, an average experience level of 22 years, and provide untold hours of talent and time to the community through active civic participation.

FRCSW and its predecessor organizations have been a positive influence to the greater San Diego community for 90 years. The command is the largest aerospace employer in San Diego County, with an annual payroll in excess of $220 million and a regional economic impact of more than $525 million. 


FRCSW’s main industrial complex has been located at Naval Air Station North Island since 1919 within the Navy’s super port of San Diego; ensuring ready access of its industrial capacity and capabilities to major naval activities throughout the Southwest.

To better serve the warfighter, FRCSW operates permanent depot-level maintenance sites at Marine Corps Air Stations Miramar, Calif., and Yuma, Ariz.; Marine Corps Bases Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay; Naval Air Weapons Station Pt Mugu, Calif.; and Naval Base Pt. Loma, Calif.

FRCSW’s manufacturing facilities provide an invaluable industrial capability to the Navy. Its ability to produce intricate metal and composite components assures the Navy the capability to meet emergency requirements. These facilities are fully permitted and environmentally friendly in one of the country’s most stringently controlled environmental areas.

FRCSW’s registration to the International Organization of Standards 14001 Environmental Management Standard (first in the federal government to register to this standard) and receipt of the Secretary of Defense Environmental Award are proof of the depot’s commitment to and excellence at protecting employees, neighbors, and environment “beyond compliance.” Facility facts include:

Naval Air Technical Data and Engineering Service Command (NATEC)


In 2013, Naval Air Technical Data and Engineering Service Center (NATEC) was disestablished as a command and organizationally realigned directly under NAVAIR 6.0.  NATEC Headquarters is located on Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California, and has a global presence throughout the world, with eight major detachments including Hawaii and Japan, and 17 field and remote sites aligned with Navy and Marine Corps facilities.


Support combat effectiveness through the delivery of cost-effective engineering technical services and technical data products/services to the Naval Aviation Enterprise.


- As the primary provider for Engineering Technical Services for Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, NATEC provides field level engineering technical advice, assistance, instruction, and training to aviation activities in the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of aviation airframes,  systems and associated equipment.

- As the authoritative source for Naval Aviation technical data and manuals, technical directives, engineering drawings and associated data, NATEC provides end to end technical data library management and training, distribution, configuration control, archive, quality assurance and technical data Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) support services.
