NAVAIR celebrated Black History Month by inviting former Tuskegee Airman Col. Charles McGee, retired U.S. Air Force, to speak about the"Tuskegee Airman Experience" to several hundred NAVAIR employees Feb. 27.

A living legend, McGee fought in World War II, in Korea and in Vietnam. He holds the record for the highest three-war total of fighter combat missions of any pilot in the U.S. Air Force history. His military service began as one of the Tuskegee Airmen in the 332nd, famed pioneers who fought racial prejudices to fly and fight for their country in World War II.

Navy test pilot Lt. Christopher Tabert takes to the sky July 27 in an F-35C test aircraft launched by a steam catapult for the first time. CF-3 is the designated carrier suitability testing aircraft, and is in Lakehurst for catapult and jet blast deflector testing. The F-35C is the carrier variant of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and is distinct from the F-35A and F-35B variants. It has larger wing surfaces and reinforced landing gear for slower catapult launch and landing approach speeds and deck impacts associated with the demanding carrier take-off and landing environment. The F-35C is undergoing test and evaluation at NAS Patuxent River prior to eventual delivery to the fleet.

A hallmark of the NAWCAD Education Partnership Program is the collaboration between educators and practitioners in the development of curriculum that highlights the real-world application of science and technology.

Imagine this scenario: There is a United States operative stranded in a war zone with valuable intelligence information, but in order to escape, he needs an energy boost (i.e. a can of Red Bull energy drink.) The students are challenged to design and build an aircraft not only capable of transporting the energy drink to the operative and bringing back the intelligence information, but also to survive the infrared missile and small arms threat in the region. The designs are judged on the basis of meeting size, weight, and accessibility requirements, as well as being the most survivable and crashworthy.
