Take a walk on the mentoring side

NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND, PATUXENT RIVER, Md. — Exercise isn’t just good for your body; it’s good for your career, too.

At a “Walking with Leaders” informal mentoring session here Sept. 20, some 35 employees walked around the drill hall track with NAVAIR’s technical leaders to gain insights and expand their professional networks.

Both Donald Corlett and Megan Montgomery said they learned how to obtain a better work-life balance.

“I got a lot of good advice about work-life balance,” Corlett said. “Specifically, that this is the time in our lives to go out and find new hobbies and the like.”

Montgomery said it helped the environment was “low stress.”

“I wanted to meet people within NAVAIR, including leaders, and since I did not know the people who attended before that day, the walking with leaders was a great opportunity,” she said.

For Denise Paone, the event was also a chance to enjoy a sunny day and get some exercise.

“My goal was to meet other members of the organization and add to my network of business associates,” Paone said. “I was able to reconnect with one of the leaders that I have not seen in months; we met for lunch the following day.”

This event was sponsored by the NAVAIR Women’s Advisory Group and its Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics (STEM) Outreach Sub-Team. The WAG, a subgroup to NAVAIR’s Executive Diversity Council, was founded in 2011 to make recommendations to senior leaders on topics such as family friendly workplace policies, women in the military, STEM education outreach, women in non-traditional roles and barrier analysis.

NAVAIR's Mentoring Program, established in 2007, offers speed and group mentoring, training, a playbook and an online tool, iMentor, to help match mentors with mentees. The national mentoring team is planning an event for January 2019 to commemorate National Mentoring Month with a focus on modern mentoring in the digital age.
