JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Lakehurst was recognized by the Department of Defense during a ceremony Aug. 23 for exemplary support to its National Guard and Reserve member employees.

NAWCAD Lakehurst was named one of the top 100 finalists for the Secretary of Defense’s 2017 Freedom Award, which honors organizations from across industry, small business and the public sector.

Thousands of nominations are submitted by National Guard and Reserve personnel each year for employers who they feel fully support their military mission.

Kathleen P. Donnelly, senior executive for Navy Support Equipment (SE) and Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment (ALRE), accepted the award on behalf of the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) from Arthur Maggs of the New Jersey Chapter of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) who manages the award on behalf of the Secretary of Defense, and Lt. Col. Alex Vlakancic, U.S. Air Force Reservist with the 514th Air Mobility Wing and NAWCAD Lakehurst employee who submitted the nomination.

“I wanted to show that I appreciate all the effort they do and sacrifice when I go on orders,” said Vlakancic. “A lot of people think reserves are one weekend a month, but that’s the absolute minimum. A lot of times you have to do more than that if you want to be proficient and show that you really know your stuff in the reserves.”

In order to qualify for the Freedom Award, an organization must first be nominated for two lower-level awards, the Patriot Award, which nominates a specific supervisor and the Seven Seals award, which nominates the entire department, said Maggs. Vlakancic submitted his supervisor and department at NAWCAD Lakehurst for both awards.

“We recognize that leaders like you are crucial to successful deployment of our equipment to meet fighting the fight,” said Donnelly. “We want to make sure that you are able to continue to do both missions, and so that’s why I’m quite privileged to accept this award on behalf of NAVAIR.”
