HEADQUARTERS, NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND, PATUXENT RIVER, Md. — Approximately 300 NAVAIR employees from across all sites attended a Journey Leadership Development Program (JLDP) executive core qualifications (ECQs) workshop held here May 11 to learn how to apply to the program.

The one- to two-year part-time JLDP is open to midgrade-level civilian and military employees who want to develop and strengthen their leadership skills, gain insight into NAVAIR’s mission and establish a network of peers and senior leaders across the command.

JLDP, established in 2010, is now aligned with the NAVAIR Leadership Development Program and includes the following:

  • New classroom-based and online courses, focused on mentoring, emotional intelligence, Emergenetics (a tool used to analyze individual thinking attributes), problem-solving, change, effective leadership and wellness
  • Senior leader interviews
  • Job shadowing assignments
  • Professional reading

The focus of the workshop was on the application process and three of the Office of Personnel Management’s ECQs: leading change, leading people and results-driven leadership. The ECQs are part of the foundation for the JLDP application and help address applicants’ leadership experience and potential.

A second workshop is scheduled for June 15.

The workshop opened with remarks from Stephen Cricchi, assistant commander, Corporate Operations and Total Force, who said he is proud of the program and its growth at NAVAIR, as well as the number of employees interested in applying.

“We have a group of folks in the formative stages of their career who are already trying to make a commitment to leadership. That’s a big deal,” he said. “You’re already leaders, or you wouldn’t be here. It’s in you to lead people, whether you’re leading up, across, or leading down, people are watching how you do things.”

Cricchi praised the program’s networking component and opportunities to become more self-aware.

“It [the program] will teach you a lot about yourself, your personal leadership style,” he said. “Leading people is really what leadership is about.”

The workshop also included a broad overview of the program, a review of the ECQs, writing tips, and remarks from a panel of current JLDP participants.

“This is your time to shine, and it’s very important to speak about yourself,” said Sherry Balmain. She and several of the other panelists shared examples from their own JLDP applications to show how to write about leadership experience for each of the three ECQs.
